Marlow explained that he and Japanese pilot Gunpei Ikari survived together for decades until Ikari was killed by a Skullcrawler. The island also features mass graves containing dinosaurs and members of Kong's family. While the 1973 expedition suffered heavy losses, including biologist San Lin's colleague Nieves being torn apart by carnivorous birds, the survivors learned that Kong is not a mindless beast but a guardian maintaining ecological balance.

In Their Own Story

In 1944, pilots Hank Marlow and Gunpei Ikari parachuted onto the island after a dogfight and fought until interrupted by the giant ape. By 1973, Bill Randa convinced the government to fund an expedition to prove Houston Brooks's Hollow Earth theory. Upon arrival, Packard's men dropped seismic explosives, which inadvertently awakened Skullcrawlers that attacked the unit. The group split: Conrad, Weaver, Nieves, Brooks, Lin, and Slivko headed north, while Packard searched for his man Chapman. Marlow revealed the truth about Kong and the Skullcrawlers to the group. After Chapman was devoured by a Skullcrawler, Weaver triggered a gas explosion to kill it. When regrouping with Packard, the Colonel insisted on avenging Chapman by killing Kong, despite warnings that this would unleash the Skullcrawlers. Packard set a trap using napalm and seismic charges at a nearby lake. The larger Skullcrawler emerged from the lake, forcing everyone except Packard to retreat. As Packard prepared to detonate the charges, Kong crushed him. With human help, Kong killed the final Skullcrawler.
